It's Not on the Test

Great music video: "So music and art and the things you love best are not in your school cause they're not on the test..."

What a great video! Teaching kids after the tests are over is a unique challenge because they feel that learning should be over since the tests are over. I've gotten a lot of resistance from my students when I try to teach 'real lessons' as opposed to giving them free time. We've had some interesting discussions and some of my students tell me things like what were in the music video-we don't need to know it cause there is no test". They are also very aware of the fact that their promotion is based on their test scores, so they feel that any effort they put in between now and the end of the school year is pointless. ( They have a good point. )The sad part is, this mindset comes from years of the testing mentality being ingrained into these 5th grade students, to the point where they associate learning with testing and can not separate the two.
